About Ljubljana

Ljubljana, Slovenia's capital and one of the most picturesque cities in Europe, also referred to as the "Ljubljana Gate", is situated on a natural passage leading from Central Europe to the Mediterranean and towards the East.

The Ljubljana River flows through the center of town, past Baroque buildings and under the ramparts of the ancient castle on the hill. In this remarkable city, the old meets the new in a way that on the west side of the river you will find a new city and modern-day commercial core, while on the east you will discover the old city packed with history, a mixture of baroque buildings, Renaissance and Art Nouveau which are kept by the medieval castle. Many romantic bridges cross the Ljubljana River, the most famous of which is Tromostovje (Triple Bridge), designed by the world famous architect and urban planner Jože Plečnik. All of these different aspects of Ljubljana blend harmoniously into a single image.

Categorized as a medium-sized European city, Ljubljana offers everything a metropolis does, yet preserves its small-town friendliness. The city offers a special young vibe, the home to over 50,000 students as well as numerous restaurants and inns that offer a wide range of local delicacies, not to mention superb wines. Ljubljana did not earn the label of "the city of wine and vine" for nothing.

Home to numerous theatres, museums and galleries, culture is a way of living and thinking and is very much a part of everyday life for the people of Ljubljana. Over 10,000 cultural events take place in the city every year, among which there are 10 international festivals. Visitors and locals can admire artists from all the different fields: From music, theatre and fine arts to the alternative and avant-garde.

Ljubljana is a city that people often return to, being an interesting, pretty and friendly place. Just ask the locals - they love it. And with a name that, according to one theory, means beloved, how could they not?

LJUBLJANA - THE GREEN CAPITAL OF EUROPE

The European Green Capital Award is a prestigious title pursued by cities all across Europe. 12 cities applied to become the 2016 European Green Capital and Ljubljana was chosen.
